On Thursday, Sept. 7, 6:30 PM, at the Wakulla County Public Library, the Wakulla Genealogy Group will host a presentation by Dr. Griggs.

Dr. Norm Griggs of Shepherd Spring Animal Hospital recently attended the Iditarod race in Alaska. He was among many on-staff veterinarians whose duties included medical attention for the dogs who participated in the race. Dr. Griggs will be sharing his experience and many photos and stories to entertain everyone. Please be sure to bring your family and friends and join us.

Dr. Griggs was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He is one of four sons of a machinist father and a “stay-at-home” mother.  After graduation from high school, he enlisted for a four-year tour in the United States Marine Corps.  Following honorable discharge, he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN and was accepted into the second class of the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.

After graduation in 1980, he and his wife Melody moved back to Memphis to start their own small animal practice in Bartlett, TN.  They raised two sons, Travis and Cody, who also served their country, Travis in the USAF and Cody as a Marine.

Dr. Griggs’ small animal practice grew to a five doctor hospital, and after 20 years at the helm, he sold the practice and later moved to Wakulla County to enjoy the remote beauty of the area, as well as fishing.

Missing the joy of a veterinary practice, Dr. Griggs started Shepherd Spring Animal Hospital in a small rental unit on US 98 and Spring Creek Road in September 2008.

“I never imagined the practice would grow like it has.  I didn’t know there were so many people living in all these woods”, laughed Dr. Griggs, who also lives in the woods.

“I must say, without reservation, that our decision to move to Wakulla County was one of the best that I ever made.  The community has opened welcome arms to Melody and I.  I love everything about the area except the bugs”, laughed Dr. Norm.

“I just love this life.”

If you have missed Dr Griggs’ previous programs about his adventures in Alaska you don't want to miss this one.
