St. Marks (A) Cemetery
Locating directions given in the 1940-41 veterans' grave registration co-locate the site with another there designated St. Marks white cemetery, which site can be identified with or within the present-day St. Marks Cemetery, as discussed under St. Marks Cemetery. Thus "St. Marks Colored Cemetery" recorded in 1940-41 evidently lies within the two-block-long, present-day St. Marks Cemetery. While no proof by inscribed tombstones is possible, since the 1940-41 project listed no veterans' burials under that entry, the conclusion is consistent with the fact of burials here by African American families in the 1990's. Date of site report narrative -
January 2002
