Ernest Spears (b.1920) of Hilliardville reports that he has seen during his adult life a graveyard that lay perhaps 100-150 yards north of Bloxham Cutoff and several hundred yards west of Springhill Rd. He says it was just north of the old Ashmore house and field that once were there, but he says that he looked for it four or five years ago and did not find it. Mr. Spears thinks that it was an African-American graveyard and maybe associated with the Ashmore turpentine operation there. He says that his search a few years ago was not a very exhaustive one. This could possibly be the Hilliardville African-American Cemetery listed by the veterans graves registration of 1940-1941; locating directions given in the 1941 document seem to place that site well south of this, but are not plain to follow by any map available now.

Date of site report narrative - December 2001
