The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. EST Monday at Hill and Wood Funeral Home (434- 296-6148). The burial was Wednesday in Centerville, Md. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Research Fund, Department of Neurology, University of Virginia. Friends may sign a guest book at www.hilland wood.com. Jim was born in Yakima, Wash., on Aug. 19, 1921, the third of five children to Pauline and Curtis Aller. Growing up he enjoyed skiing, hiking, mountain climbing and camping in the beautiful outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. Jim worked hard in the family farming business and at his studies, earning an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. His graduation from the Naval Academy in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering marked the beginning of a successful and distinguished military and academic career. Upon receiving his commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy, he entered World War II as a gunnery officer on the USS McClanahan. Jim saw plenty of action during the war escorting convoys across the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean and, at the conclusion of the war, was training to become a naval aviator. After the war he served as a carrier aviator in the Pacific Fleet until 1947, then attended the Naval Postgraduate School and was subsequently detailed to Harvard University, where he earned master's degrees in both applied mathematics and computers. Following an assignment as an all-weather test pilot at Patuxent River, Md., Jim participated in the Korean War as a reconnaissance pilot. Beginning in 1953 he spent six years heading the development of the Regulus I and II surface and submarine cruise-missile systems and was involved in the early years of America's manned space program. He was also an observer at the Nevada Weapons Test Site and later categorized himself as a nuclear-testing survivor. After directing development activities on the Pacific missile range and service as electronic warfare officer for the First Fleet, he retired from the Navy as a commander in December of 1962. Once he retired, and with a family that included a wife and five children to look after, Jim really got busy. While working for the Center for Naval Analysis he completed his doctorate in biomedical engineering. After receiving that degree in 1968, Jim held the chair of physical sciences at the U.S. Naval War College and was subsequently appointed associate professor of clinical engineering at the George Washington University Medical School. In 1975 he moved to the National Science Foundation, where he served as a program director in several highly technical biomedical engineering positions and promoted research on the use of computers to improve the lives of the handicapped. He received two special achievement awards and the National Science Foundation Meritorious Service Award. After his retirement from the National Science Foundation he continued his professional work as a consultant through 2003. Visionary in his approach to the world's energy and agricultural challenges, he was a long-term advocate of the Biosaline Concept for using marginal lands and high-salinity environments for food and fuel production. During his career Jim was a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and of the Society for Advanced Medical Systems and an editorial adviser to "Biocharacterist." He has been a consultant to the President's Advisory Council on Management Improvement (Health) and a Fellow in Medical Systems Development (United States Public Health Service). Jim enjoyed a wide variety of interests throughout his life, including a love of the outdoors, gardening, beekeeping and summers spent on the family farm in New Hampshire. He demonstrated a lasting scientific curiosity in paranormal abilities such as water dowsing and Kirlian auras. He was particularly keen on current world affairs, had strong well-researched opinions about these matters and took great pleasure in lively political discussions with family members and friends. Jim was an individual of great integrity and character who was immensely proud of his family and of his service to his country. He lived a full life, left all he touched with wonderful memories and will be greatly missed by his many friends and family. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Westminster Canterbury for their care and concern during his time there. Born 1908 in Ashmore near Sopchoppy, Freeman grew up In the woods of Wakulla County with a family of six brothers and four sisters. His early years were spent in pursuits of hunting and fishing along the Ochlockonee River, and he never lost his love of being on the river and in the woods. During his early manhood, he helped the Army Corps of Engineers survey most of Wakulla Country, from Crawfordville to the Ochlockonee River, and worked his own logging operation with J.B. Kyle, a lifelong friend. Following this, Freeman moved to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida and, while there, met the love of his life, Mary Belle Ridgell. In the years to follow, Freeman joined Crawfordville High School as a mathematics teacher and also coached the basketball team to the state finals. In 1964 Freeman was elected superintendent of Leon County schools. He served two terms, and in 1972 retired to the Ochlockonee River and Wakulla County. He wrote many articles for a local magazine that described situations, local residents and life in the early 1900s in Wakulla County.
