Sharon Lee Henderson Hale, 65, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband, Forrest Lee Hale. She was the co-owner of Henderson Funeral Home, which was Wakulla County's first funeral home and ambulance service. It opened in 1971. She was a nurse, an EMT and a paramedic, working in both Leon and Wakulla counties. She was past president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit No.162 in Deerfield Beach. She was also active with the Wakulla County American Cancer Society and Red Cross. She was a Baptist. She was a member and lead singer in the church choir. Mariah also sang with The Gospel Wonders and The Tallahassee Stars for many years. She was an active member of the Wakulla County Senior Citizens. She was a member of the Heroines of Jericho and the Sons and Daughters of Joshua and Pallbearers Lodge No. 10. She was a chartered member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Wakulla County Fire Department and was a first responder for Wakulla County. She leaves to mourn her passing three daughters, Linda Clary (and husband James), Rowena Hall Johnson (and husband David) and Sheila Perry; four sons, Alvin Hall, Undra Hall, Juan Perry (and wife Carolyn) and Quintin Perry (and wife Bobbie); an adopted daughter, Elease Session; seven grandchildren, Jamilia Clary, James Clary Jr., Jeremy Hart, Richard Coleman Jr., Phillip House Jr., Selese House and David Johnson; an aunt, Cornelius Bailey; and a host of relatives and friends. Margaret Shelton Hamby, 93, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, at her home in Perry. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. EDT Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Perry. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT this evening at the First United Methodist Church. Burns Funeral Home (850-584-4149) is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts and remembrances be made to the First United Methodist Church or Big Bend Hospice. Mrs. Hamby was born on January 27, 1914, in Winona, Mississippi. She is the daughter of Captain (CSA) Frank and Tommie Shelton. Mrs. Hamby and her late husband, Walter, and son George moved to Perry in 1945 from Miami, when Mr. Hamby was transferred to the Tallahassee District of the U.S. Border Patrol. He later served as chief of police in Perry. Mrs. Hamby retired as supervisor of elections of Taylor County in 1996, after 20 years of service. Prior to that, she was a secretary and general office manager at Taylor County High School. She was known for her civic service to the community, where she often gave speeches to civic groups, and middle and high school students, about the significance of the "one" vote. A major focus of her tenure in office was increasing voter registration. She was very pleased when the County Commission gave her an old library van, which she drove all over the county registering people to vote. She was especially concerned with making sure that citizens in outlying areas like Steinhatchee have every opportunity to register and vote. During her tenure in office she was very active in the Florida Association of State Supervisors and served as its chaplain. She was one of the first women presidents of the Perry-Taylor County Chamber of Commerce and was very active in the Pine Tree Festival and the Florida Forest Festival. She was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, and helped establish the Taylor County Historical Society, serving as its secretary and treasurer for many years. She is a member of the Perry Woman's Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. She helped establish the Order of Rainbow for Girls and served as its first Mother Advisor. The First United Methodist Church was a focal point in her life. She taught Sunday School, served on numerous committees, served as chairman of the board, and is still a member of the Guild Circle. Mrs. Hamby is also a true daughter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, since her father was a Confederate officer who was injured at the Battle of Gettysburg. In addition to the above, she always found time to help raise money for the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Heart Fund, Easter Seals, United Way of the Big Bend and many other activities that benefited the community. In recognition of her service to the community, the Mu Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi chose her as Woman of the Year in 1976. She is survived by her grandson, Walter P. Hamby (and wife Jessica); her great-granddaughter Kiersten Hamby; her step-great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Hutton of High Springs; a daughter-in-law, Glenda G. Hamby of Perry and Tallahassee; her niece, Sylvia (and husband Thomas Malone) of Jacksonville, Ala.; a nephew, Dr. David Shelton of Greensboro, N.C.; and several great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. Kenneth P. Hamlin, 79, a self-employed tile contractor, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Caroll T. Hamlin. WOODVILLE - Kenneth Eugene Hampton, 50, died Wednesday, November 14, 2007, after a brief illness of lung cancer. His devoted and loving wife, Kim, of 21 years, son, Kenneth Jr. and his family were at his bedside. He loved spending time with his family and friends. On the weekends he was up to a game of horseshoes and he loved to be the first to call you on the weekends at 7:30 in the morning. Kenny enjoyed fishing, hunting and going to the beach, or anything that had to do with the outdoors. Kenny was of the Baptist faith. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Dr. Morgan A. Hanson, 77, died Sunday, October 7, 2007. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lillian Hanson. Following his retirement, he continued his research, writing and assisting numerous international doctoral students in the field of Linear Programming. Essie Mae Hargrett, 79, a retired nurse's assistant and child-care provider, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital after a brief illness. MONTICELLO - Winnie Alma Reddick Arline Harrell, 92, a homemaker, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, in Thomasville, Ga. She was married in 1934 to the late Thomas Loren Arline who died in 1978 and later to Lt. Col. U.S.A.F. Ret., William Harrison Harrell, who died in 1989. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 162, both in Monticello. After moving to Monticello from Thomasville in 1961, she was active in other civic organizations. She is survived by a daughter, Gayle Arline Hayes of Thomasville; two sons, R. Stan Arline of Tallahassee and Thomas Loren Arline Jr. of Blairsville, Ga.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Pearl R. Bennett and Edna R. She was licensing director for Florida State University for over 10 years. Mrs. Harris was associated with Collegiate Licensing in Atlanta. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Harris, affectionately known as "Big Granny," loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He graduated from North Florida Christian School in 1983. He graduated in 1987 from Florida State University with a degree in computer science and was selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his master's degree in computer science from the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering in 1989. He was the Tallahassee collection-center coordinator for Operation Christmas Child. His wife, Shannon, is a partner in the Holland & Knight law firm. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church, where he was a lifelong member. He had taught Sunday School in the College Students Department and sang with the church Praise Team. In 1993, Howard was the recipient of a heart transplant. An advocate for organ donations, he spoke of his personal experience before a large congregation in his church in 2001. He enjoyed playing the piano, photography, traveling, sailing and spending time at Alligator Point. He also was proud to be a stay-at-home dad. He was a lifetime member of the Tallahassee Little Theatre. Operation Christmas Child is an international children's charity that collects shoeboxes filled with toys for children in Third World countries. Last year, the local Operation Christmas Child project collected almost 8,000 boxes of toys, which became part of more than seven million collected worldwide. Other survivors include two daughters, Sabrina, age 8, and Arienne, 9 months; his mother, Wanda Hartsfield; two brothers, Julius "Rick" Hartsfield and Hugh Hartsfield; two sisters-in-law, Joy Hartsfield and Robyn Britton; two nieces, Cassidy and Darby Britton; and three in-laws, Annette Hannon Lee and Bob and Anne Britton. He was past international vice president and a lifetime member No. 28 of Good Bears of the World club and in 1985 was instrumental in implementing the bear program for the Leon County Sheriffs Office on behalf of abused children. The program is now used everywhere. He was a past president, vice president and board member of the Tallahassee Lodging and Restaurant Association. He was a founding member of the Tallahassee Society of Association Executives and a member of the National Association of Catering Executives, serving as president, vice president and education director. He was a member of the Florida Hotel and Motel Association and the Hotel Sales Marketing Association. He attended Unity of Tallahassee church. He is survived by his father and mother, Joseph and Cecelia "Bea" Harvey of Crawfordville; two brothers, Raymond R. SOPCHOPPY FL - Reuben B. Haskett Sr., 70 of Sopchoppy died Tuesday, August 21, after a long illness. A native of North Carolina and a longtime resident of Sopchoppy, he was a retired carpenter and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a son, R. B. Billy Dee Hatcher, 73, a land developer, died Friday, June 2, 2006, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Brenda B. Hatcher. Billy was a life member of the Elks Club and commodore of the St. Marks Yacht Club. For many years, he coached youth baseball with his friends Tom Overstreet and Bill Campbell. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and, in years past, when his children were younger, spent many weekends at the coast with family and friends. June Anne Hengstebeck, 76, a teacher, died Monday, May 23, 2005, at her home surrounded by her family who loved her dearly. A Mass in celebration of her life will be at 3 p.m. EDT Sunday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Tallahassee, with burial at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Cemetery in Crawfordville. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. EDT Saturday at the chapel of Good Shepherd. Abbey-Riposta Funeral Home in Tallahassee (850-562-1518) is handling arrangements. She was born June 30, 1928, in Detroit to Mae and Clarence Partridge. She met her husband, Donald P. Hengstebeck, before he left to serve in World War II. The two married when he returned in 1948. She wanted to have a large family like her mother-in-law, who had 11 children. Don and June Hengstebeck had five children, who followed their mother across the country to fulfill her wish of always having her family close by. Mrs. Hengstebeck was a teacher and taught hundreds of children, some of whom kept in touch with her years after leaving her classroom. She was vice principal at St. Christopher's School in West Covina, Calif., and was awarded teacher of the year in Los Angeles County in 1974. She was a lifeguard when she was younger and taught her family to swim well, always reminding them to "kick your feet" and "point your toes." She was a devout Catholic, going to Mass regularly and teaching her children and grandchildren catechism. She taught her grandchildren that liver was "sunshine" meat and to never let the sun go down on your anger. She loved evening walks on the beach and crocheting blankets for her family. She enjoyed playing the piano and playing pinochle. She loved new shoes, the color blue and going to restaurants. Most importantly, Mrs. Hengstebeck loved her husband and cherished the family they created. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Donald Hengstebeck; two daughters, Ann Beyer (and husband Tom) of Crawfordville and Susan Loftis of Tallahassee; three sons, Pat Hengstebeck (and wife Barbara) and Jim Hengstebeck (and wife Cindy), both of Tallahassee, and Joseph Hengstebeck of Crawfordville; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and her dog, Abby. He worked for Henry's Radiator Shop for 32 years, and after he retired he opened Herring's Radiator Shop in Woodville. CRAWFORDVILLE - Vera Gladys Hunt Hirsiger, 92, died of natural causes Saturday, June 30, 2007, at her home. Gazzie Norman Hobbs, age 93, died June 11, 2016 at home, surrounded by her family. Prior to moving to St. Marks, Gazzie lived in Thomson, GA where she and her husband Alex, farmed, raised cattle and owned two country stores. In 1962, they purchased Shell Island Fish Camp in St. Marks, FL and moved their family there but retained their property in Georgia. She and Alex operated the Fish Camp and Marina until 1988 when they turned it over to their son and his wife, Allen and Ruthie Hobbs. They have now retired and the business has been turned over to her grandson and his wife, Jimmy and Sherie Bevis in 2010. The Fish Camp has now had three generations of the same family and she hoped to keep that legacy going. She was Past President of the St. Marks Woman's Club, Treasurer of St. Marks Baptist Church, and taught Sunday School for many years. She was fortunate to have her son, daughter and their families residing at Shell Island with her for all these years. Survivors include a son, Allen Hobbs (Ruthie), a daughter, Gail Field (David); five grandchildren: Jimmy Bevis (Sherie), Brian Hobbs (Samantha), Alana Wohlrab (Dan); Anthony Hobbs (Becky), Christina Hankins (Mark) and four great-grandchildren: Emily Bevis, Jon Wohlrab, Chase Hobbs and Rick Williams. She also has one living sister, Ruby Huff Pulliam, who lives in Thomson, GA. Dora Jones, her caregiver for six years, has given superb care and became a member of the family. Becky Lewis and Judy Bright have also been excellent caregivers. She is preceded in death by her husband, of 64 years, Alex Hobbs (2010), and a nephew/like son, Ken Hobbs (2013). Visitation was held Monday, June 13, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bevis funeral Home, Harvey-Young Chapel in Crawfordville, FL. APALACHICOLA - Robert Lee Howell, 76, a retired brigadier general, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, in Tallahassee. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Howell. Howell graduated from Chapman High School in 1947, attended Florida State University and was a graduate of New York University. He was a longtime resident of Apalachicola. He was the Franklin County clerk of the court for 26 years. In 1983, he moved to St. Augustine to become the assistant adjutant general of the Florida National Guard, where he served until he was 60. He served in the National Guard for 41 years. Upon his return to his hometown, he was elected mayor of Apalachicola for two terms. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Apalachicola. Gen. Howell is also survived by his twin brother, William J. Howell (and wife Sally) of Ocala; a sister, Frances Monroe (and husband Ken) of Shellman, Ga.; a son, Robert L. Howell IV of Tallahassee; a daughter, Donna L. He was a member of Pelham First Baptist Church, Smith-Spence American Legion Post No. 144 and the Adult Men's V Sunday School Class. He was an Army veteran and served in Germany with the Indian Town Gap, Pa., 28th Infantry Division. He was born in Grady County, Ga., on Feb. 12, 1919, the son of Mark and Nymmie Swann Howze. Howze of Johnson City, Katherine Howze Powell (and husband Benjamin) of Anderson, S.C., Gene Howze and family of Stedman, N.C., Chris Howze and family of Spring Lake, N.C., and Vance Howze and family of Spring Lake; eight great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Bud Willoughby, both of Thomasville, Ga., Ashley Schuman of Meigs, David West IV of Crawfordville, Kaylee West of Meigs, Holli Maxwell and Kelly Maxwell, both of Tifton, Ga., and Caroline Howze of Slidell, La.; two great-great-grandchildren, Taylor and Gage Willoughby, both of Thomasville; and a brother, Chester O. Howze and wife of Cheverly, Md. He was preceded in death on Jan. 7, 1994, by his wife, Marjorie Hazel West Howze; a son, Maston E. Howze Jr.; two sisters, Ione Howze Hickox and Charlotte M. MELBOURNE - Edward Gordon Humphries Sr., 88, who retired from the U.S. Army as a chief warrant officer, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, at his home. The service, with military honors, will be 2 p.m. EST Friday at Aaran Annex Addition Cemetery in Crawfordville. He was born Oct. 1, 1918, in Clifton Forge, Va. After graduating as valedictorian from Covington High School, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army. Gordon retired in 1963 and moved his family to Melbourne, where he resided until his death. Gordon was a member of the American Legion and the Reserve Officers Association. After military retirement, he worked at Patrick Air Force Base for eight years. Gordon enjoyed golf and, until his health prohibited, was often seen playing at local courses and in the neighborhood field practicing. He is survived by two sons, Ed Humphries (and wife Kathleen) of Whitehall, Mon., and Bryon Humphries (and wife Sarah) of Staunton, Va.; a daughter, Brenda Hicks (and husband Tommy) of Crawfordville; two granddaughters, Crissy Sarvis (and husband Mike) and Dawn Rigdon (and husband Justin); and four great-grandchildren, Michael, Meghan and Madison Sarvis and Harley Rigdon, all of Crawfordville. Survivors include a son, Michael Hurley Jr. (and wife Sheree) of Woodville; two daughters, Christina Pilgrim (and husband Bryon) and Ashley Hurley, both of Crawfordville; a brother, Ronnie Day (and wife Michelle) of St. Marks; three sisters, Charlotte Stanley (and husband Carson) of St. Marks, Lisa Alvarez (and husband John) of Jacksonville and Paula Barfield (and husband Bryan) of Monticello; her companion, Dave Byrd of Crawfordville; four grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Jacqueline N. Hurst, 63, a homemaker, died Monday, April 3, 2006. Strong & Jones Funeral Home (850-224-2139) is handling arrangements. She was a member of Medart Kingdom Hall. Survivors include two daughters, Carol McKay of Woodville and Carol Marie Hurst of Crawfordville; a sister, Carol Ann "Cookie" Smith of Wiscasset, Maine; a sister-in-law, Peggy Maxwell of Dewy Rose, Ga.; and two granddaughters, Savannah Nicole Lail and Persephone Hurst. Helen Mae Hutton, 89, a secretary for an attorney's office, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003. Private services will be at a later date. Harvey-Young Funeral Home in Crawfordville (926-3333) is handling arrangements. Mrs. Hutton was also a real estate broker and antiques dealer. She was of the Presbyterian faith. Survivors include a nephew, Rhett Taff (and wife Connie) of Crawfordville; a niece, Lucinda Daniel (and husband Johnny) of Crawfordville; and several great-nieces and -nephews.
