She was the oldest girl of a family of eight children. She was working at The Tallahassee Cafe when she met her future husband, George D. Petrandis, a Greek immigrant who had recently arrived in Tallahassee. They opened their first restaurants together, The Nickel Shop and The Splendid Lunch, both on Adams Street. Together they built George's Cafe & Bar and George's Motel in Wakulla County at the Ochlockonee River Bridge. Both businesses are still operated by the Petrandis family as George's Lighthouse Point Condos and Angelo and Son's Seafood Restaurant. Survivors include three sons, Jimmy (and wife Nancy), Johnny (and wife Penny) and Angelo (and wife Arline); 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Agnes Hays of Dallas; and a cousin, Opal Arnold Clark of Tallahassee. Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on 8/31/2004.

Bulah Raker Petrandis The loving matriarch of a large family, Bulah Raker Petrandis, died quietly in her home on Trescott Drive on Sunday, August 29, 2004, after a long illness. Mrs. Petrandis was born in Crawfordville, Florida on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1913. The oldest girl in a family of eight children, her father was Rob Raker, a fisherman, and her mother Estelle Mathers Raker, a housewife. At one time the Raker family owned much of the southern part of Wakulla County and the land at the end of Bottoms Road in Panacea was known as the Raker Seine Yard. Today only one sister, Agnes Hays of Texas; five cousins, Opal Willis of Tallahassee, John Mathers and Murray Mathers, both of Wakulla County, and Martha Yonan of Louisiana, Janet Rizo of Springhill, Florida; and one sister-in-law, Jessie Raker of Wakulla County, remain to tell us of the family's "old days" in Wakulla County. While working as a young girl in a Greek-owned restaurant in Tallahassee, The "Tallahassee Cafe" on Adams Street, Bulah Raker met her life's partner. George Petrandis had come from Patmos to the United States through Ellis Island in 1929 and came south to Tallahassee to work with his brother, Nick Petrandis. In 1933 he and Bulah were married and soon in business for themselves in a small restaurant on Adams Street called the "Nickel Shop," then later the "Splendid Lunch." Bulah and George worked hard together and saved much of what they made to invest in property. At one time they had saved enough to buy a car or a piece of property, they bought the building and kept on walking. One family story tells of the time when the commander of Camp Gordon Johnston came to George and Bulah's restaurant as George was locking up for the night. George opened and fed the officer and his friends and as a result, received a contract for several hundred sandwiches needed by sunrise the next day. His men were in training for beach assault on Dog Island in the Gulf of Mexico, and needed provisions for the exercise. George and Bulah and her sister, Helen, worked through the night and the sandwiches were ready when the Army truck came to pick them up. They were sold for only a nickel apiece, but the contract was for more than one day, and this provided the economic boost the struggling young couple needed. George and Bulah were part of the vibrant Greek culture that worked in Tallahassee during the late 1930's and early 1940's. The joys of life, rather than its hardships were emphasized. At this time, there was not yet a Greek Orthodox Church, and their services were conducted in the present Episcopal Church on Monroe Street. Many wedding receptions and "Greek Night" dances were celebrated in the old red brick Armory on North Monroe Street. Bulah was very proud, both of her Greek husband's heritage and his American citizenship. She was an avid student of the famous Greek culinary arts. With the help of George, his sisters Irene Mitchell and Despinoula Gouras, as well as his mother, all of whom he brought to America, Bulah soon could bake all of the Greek pastries. Her children will tell you that she could beat the Greek ladies! In spite of the hardships of building a business, and learning a language in a foreign land, in a world at war; the natural optimism of these people triumphed. Together Bulah and George began to spend their Sundays at a beautiful spot near the Ochlockonee River that probably reminded George of his island home. Soon after the WPA built the bridge over the river there, they bought the land at the intersection of Mashes Sands Road and Highway 98. The Ochlockonee River Bridge was once featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the bridge to nowhere, because there was no road on the Franklin County side. During the summer of 1946, Moon's Jewelry Store wanted to expand its business, so Bulah and George lost their lease where the Splendid Lunch was located. Another location was offered, but Bulah and George decided to begin their Panacea building program. Working along with their three sons, who were born between 1935 and 1948, they began to build a small resort. They rented home-made fishing boats for $1.50 a day, served meals, rented cabins, and sold alcohol in a package store that George built over the water to take advantage of the "wet county" status of Franklin County. The county line was changed to the middle of the river in the 1990's. The Petrandis family used kerosene lanterns, a well and windmill for water and gas-powered generators. When the power company was finally ready to bring electricity to the county, George and Bulah bought the poles to run the power and telephone lines from Panacea to the bridge, a distance of three miles. The original rental cabins and restaurant, known as George's Cafe, were built of lumber salvaged from the army barracks at Camp Gordon Johnston. Their restaurant became famous for its fresh seafood and the willingness of its owners to serve anything you wanted, anytime you got there. During the filming of the "Tarzan" movies at Wakulla Springs, Johnny Weismuller was a frequent customer. Many congressmen, legislators and governors made the 35 mile drive to "eat over the water," with George and Bulah. Bulah recently told us that Governor Leroy Collins celebrated his election in George's Care. He came into the kitchen that night and picked up her husband, and laughing, called out, "George! We won!" That restaurant became the cornerstone of the family's holdings and is still operated by Bulah's grandson, Thomas. It is now known as Angelo and Son's Seafood Restaurant. The original motel cabins grew to a 58-unit motel, and has now been converted to a condominium complex, known as George's Lighthouse Point. Ten new units were recently completed by another grandson, Lee. Another complex (to be named Bulah's Cove) is under construction by a third grandson, John. All of Bulah and George's sons, Jimmy Johnny and Angelo, were raised with the parable of the three sticks -- if you separate them, you can break each one easily -- tied together; they become an unbreakable entity. This creed has helped the family to be successful. Bulah Raker Petrandis was a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She guided and inspired us all with her love, wisdom and support. We never heard her raise her voice in anger. We are grateful for her life and will miss her. She was pre-deceased by her husband, George, who died in 1978. She was so faithful to his memory that his hat was still hanging on her living room wall the day she died. She is survived by three sons and their wives. Jimmy and Nancy Petrandis, Johnny and Penny Petrandis, and Angelo and Arline Petrandis; ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on 9/12/2004.
