CRAWFORDVILLE - Joseph A. "Joe-Joe" Raker, 82, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, in Covington, Wash. Marlatt Funeral Home in Washington (253-852-2620) handled arrangements. He was honored by the Knights of Columbus at a memorial service at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Nov. 20 in Covington. Joseph, or Joe-Joe as he often referred to himself, was the consummate salesman. At age 12 he began his sales career, selling everything from Cloverine Salve to magazines, cookware, aluminum and vinyl siding and cemetery property. He could sell ice cubes to an Eskimo. This old salesman is pushing his wares up in heaven now. He passed from the neighborhood doorsteps of the American suburbs up to the doorsteps of St. Peter in the early hours of Sunday, Nov. 3, which was the birthday of his departed wife of 55 years, Elaine. Joe-Joe was the youngest of four boys and was raised in the small Florida town of Crawfordville. He was born Sept. 27, 1920 to Bessie W. and Robert H. Raker. Joe and his brothers were raised by their widowed mother. He had many good stories of his caring but very strong-willed mother. Joe served in the Army stateside and received a medical discharge, at which time he went back to his career in sales. Anyone who met Joe could not forget him easily. He was a warmhearted character who could sell himself into your heart and call you a friend. His tales of his youth and heyday or songs from his ukulele or mouth organ would captivate a room - well, at least a room filled with his grandchildren. Most recently Joe, a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, wrote and sold a cookbook to raise money for the community. Those who knew and loved him as a friend, father, grandfather and salesman will remember him. Survivors include a loving daughter, Christy; three grandchildren, Bradley Guy, Mark Joseph and Tara Elaine; and four great-grandchildren, Mathew Robert, Cody Wyatt, Emma Elizabeth and Caroline Joy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Raker; two sons, Bob Raker and Timothy Alan Raker; and grandson Tyler. Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on 11/21/2002.

Mary Newman Roberts, 93, a prominent and longtime resident of Tallahassee, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005. She was the widow of the late Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice B.K. Roberts. No funeral services are planned pursuant to Mrs. Roberts' instructions. Beggs Funeral Home Apalachee Parkway Chapel (850-942-2929) is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the B.K. and Mary N. Roberts Scholarship Fund at the Florida State University College of Law, FSU Foundation Inc., c/o Office of Planned Giving, 2010 Levy Ave., Building B, Suite 300, Tallahassee, FL 32310-2660. All checks should contain a note in the memo section stating: "B.K. and Mary N. Roberts Scholarship Fund in the College of Law." The daughter of James F. Newman and Eva Allen Newman of Bagdad, she was born Jan. 12, 1912, in Greenville, Madison County. Mrs. Roberts was a 1929 graduate of Leon High School, where she served on the student council and was a basketball star. She was a 1933 graduate of Florida State College for Women, now Florida State University, with a teaching certificate. Mrs. Roberts began work at the Capitol the day after graduating from college stuffing envelopes in the office of the late Secretary of State Bob Gray. Soon after she began this assignment he needed someone who could take dictation and she was given a job working with Secretary Gray. Mary Newman and B.K. Roberts were married in August 1937. Many years later he would credit her fierce loyalty and moral support in difficult times as being the foundation of his highly successful legal career. Mrs. Roberts was the only woman ever selected by Ed Ball, the wealthy and influential Jacksonville lumber executive, to serve on the Edward Ball Wildlife Foundation board. He often asked her to serve as hostess at Wakulla Lodge, where he entertained friends from all over the world. She was a gracious lady who put great attention to detail into everything she did. When entertaining the British ambassador to the United States and his wife, Lord and Lady Ramsbotham, she took them straight to Wakulla Springs. The trip down the river gave the ambassador, an avid birdwatcher, a close look at some rare specimens. This was followed at precisely 5 o'clock by tea served English style in Ball's private quarters at Wakulla Lodge on china brought by Mrs. Roberts. In 1955, at a meeting of the American Bar Association in England, the Lord Mayor of London was showing Mrs. Roberts the paintings on the ceiling of Guild Hall. A photograph of the two in this scene was sent around the world, and Mrs. Roberts' granddaughter, Mary Anne Terrell, treasures the photo today. The late Allen Morris, who was a veteran journalist and author of the Florida Handbook that became the essential textbook on state government in Florida and clerk emeritus for the House of Representatives, wrote in the 1973-74 edition of the handbook: "It was Justice Roberts and his wife, Mary, who stimulated the interest of the compiler, then a Miamian, in the historic aspects and lore of the other Florida." During World War II, Mrs. Roberts volunteered as a Red Cross nurse's aide in Jacksonville. In Tallahassee, she was very active in the community, volunteering at Faith Presbyterian Church, Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and in the restoration of Goodwood Plantation. She was a founding member of the Community Foundation of North Florida. She was a member of the Economics Club of Florida, Capital Tiger Bay Club and was a charter member of the Governor's Club. As a Seminole Booster, she attended all FSU home football games until 2003. As a guide for living, Mrs. Roberts kept the following quote on her dressing table: "I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect for I shall not pass this way again." She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Roberts Miller; two granddaughters, Mary Anne Miller Terrell and Kara Roberts Ganim; and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas F. Roberts. Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on 11/20/2005.
